The Mourning Star and Captain Blackwake on a cursed sea

Official lore

The curse behind the conquest.

Before the albums, before the chants, before the crew became impossible to drown, there was a captain, a crown, and a sea that learned to hate.

The mythos

Four things steer the ship.

These are the anchors for the songs, videos, merch, and the larger story world.

01

The Captain

Blackwake is not a hero. He is command, hunger, thunder, and the kind of will that mistakes damnation for victory.

02

The Ship

The Mourning Star appears from fog with funeral-shroud sails and cannon fire bright enough to make graveyards answer.

03

The Crown

The Drowned Crown promises an empire that cannot fall, a crew that cannot die, and a war that cannot end.

04

The Crew

Their hearts no longer beat, but their drums do. Their throats no longer breathe, but their voices roar.

Lore

Cursed to Conquer

No one remembers the captain’s true name.

Some say he was born under a blood moon on a prison island where the dead were chained beneath the docks. Others swear he was once a king’s executioner who turned his blade against the crown. The oldest sailors whisper something worse: that he was never born at all, but dragged from the sea by a storm that had learned how to hate.

They called him Captain Veyr Blackwake, because wherever his ship sailed, the ocean behind it turned black as oil.

His ship was the Mourning Star, a war-galleon carved from drowned wood and iron pulled from the anchors of sunken kingdoms. Its sails were stitched from funeral shrouds. Its cannons fired bone and brimstone. Its figurehead was a screaming angel with its wings torn off.

Veyr did not sail for gold.

He sailed for conquest.

For years, the Mourning Star appeared without warning from walls of fog, taking ports, burning fleets, and leaving only one message nailed to the gates of every fallen city:

Kneel before the tide, or be buried beneath it.

But power, like the sea, always demands payment.

Deep beneath the world, below coral tombs and trenches where sunlight dies, there slept an ancient thing called The Drowned Crown. It was not a treasure, though men had died calling it one. It was a relic older than kings, forged by the first tyrant who tried to command death itself.

Veyr found it in the belly of a sunken cathedral.

He placed it on his head.

And the sea went silent.

For one heartbeat, every wave in the world stopped moving. Every sailor felt the air leave their lungs. Every corpse beneath the ocean opened its eyes.

Then the Crown spoke.

It promised Veyr an empire that could never fall. A crew that could never die. A war that could never end.

All it wanted in return was his soul.

Veyr laughed.

“A soul is a poor anchor,” he said. “Take it.”

The Crown burned itself into his skull, and his men rose around him as something more and less than living. Their hearts no longer beat, but their drums did. Their throats no longer breathed, but their voices roared. They became a legion of cursed pirates, bound by black magic, salt, blood, and steel.

The living called them monsters.

The dead called them brothers.

Wherever the Mourning Star sailed, the sky cracked with thunder and the crew sang battle hymns loud enough to wake the graveyards. Their music was not made for taverns or courts. It was made for the last moments before cannon fire. For the march across burning docks. For the swing of the blade. For the enemy realizing too late that death was not coming.

It had already arrived.

But the curse had a hunger.

Each victory fed it. Each conquered port made it stronger. The crew began to change. Bones split through skin. Eyes burned like lanterns in a crypt. Their songs grew heavier, darker, and more violent until even the sea beasts fled from the sound.

Still, Captain Blackwake pushed onward.

He conquered the Ashen Isles.

He sank the Seven Saints Armada.

He chained a kraken to the hull of his ship and used it to drag enemy fleets beneath the waves.

But no conquest satisfied the Crown.

One night, beneath a sky with no stars, the Crown whispered the truth.

There was only one kingdom left to take.

Not a nation.

Not a throne.

The world of the living itself.

So the Mourning Star turned toward the horizon, its lanterns glowing green through the fog, its undead crew gathering on deck with cutlasses raised and drums pounding like war engines.

Captain Blackwake stood at the bow, the Drowned Crown fused to his skull, his coat snapping in the storm wind like the wings of some dead god.

Behind him, the crew began to chant.

Not a prayer.

Not a warning.

A promise.

Cursed to conquer.
Conquered to curse.
We sail from the grave.
And the grave comes first.

And somewhere, far across the black water, the first bells of the living world began to ring.

Not in celebration.

In fear.
